Nervous System Flashcards
Function of Nervous System
controls, stimulates, and coordinates all other body movements
Neuron
fundamental unit of nervous tissue
Dendrites
fiber branches that receive impulses from other parts of the nervous system and bring the impulses toward the cell body
Axons
transmit impulses away from the cell body
Myelin
fatty covering over axons
node of Ranvier
break in the myelin every half millimeter
Gray matter
areas that contain mostly UNmyelinated fibers
White matter
areas that contain mostly MYELINATED fibers
Nerve fiber
conductor of impulses from the neuron
Synapse
small gap between neurons involving very complex physiological actions
Tract
group of myelinated nerve fibers within the CNS that carries a specific type of information
Motor (efferent) neuron
large cell body & multibranched dendrites, long axon
Located within the ANTERIOR horn of the spinal cord
Conducts impulses from the spinal cord to the periphery
Sensory (afferent) neuron
dendrite arises in the skin
Runs into the POSTERIOR root ganglion
Impulses from periphery to spinal cord
CNS
brain & spinal cord
Brain components
cerebrum
brainstem
cerebellum
