Nervous System Flashcards
What is the central nervous system?
- Brain
- Spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system
All parts of the body
Pathway of an electrical impulse through the nervous system for a conscious action.
Stimulus Receptor (sense organ) Sensory neuron Central nervous system Motor neuron Effector (muscle or gland) Response
What is a receptor
-A nerve cell that detects the stimulus
What is a neuron
A specialised cell that carries electrical messages around the body
What is an impulse
An electrical message that is carried by a neuron
What are reflex actions
Fast, automatic protective responses. They are involuntary. They do not involve the conscious part of the brain.
Pathway of electrical impulse from a reflex action
Stimulus Receptor (sense organ) Sensory neuron Relay neuron in spinal cord Motor neuron Effector (muscle) Response
How is an impulse carried across a synapse?
Neurotransmitters diffuse across the synapse and bind onto receptors on the motor neuron.
