Nervous System Flashcards
Why does a reflex action not need to be learned?
Because it doesn’t involve the conscious areas of our brain.
Describe a reflex action (say the steps in order).
Stimulus–> Receptor–> Sensory Neurone–> RELAY NEURONE–> Motor Neurone–> Effector–> Response
Where is the synapse located?
In the relay neurone
What can an effector be?
Either a muscle or a gland.
What is a reflex action?
A rapid automatic response to a stimulus
What are the coordination centres in a reflex action?
The brain, spinal cord and pancreas.
What does the cerebral cortex do?
Responsible for high brain functions, like consciousness, intelligence, memory and language.
What does the medulla do?
Controls unconscious activities, like breathing and your heart rate.
What does the cerebellum do?
Responsible for muscle coordination.
