Nervous System Flashcards
3 features of a reflex arc
- Very quick response
- Automatic
- Protective
Reflex action which involves eye
Blinking
What type of signal is a nerve impulse?
Electrical
Processes which occur in withdrawal reflex
- Receptor reacts to stimulus
- Impulse passes from receptor to co-ordinator
- Impulse passes along relay nerve
- Impulse passes across synapse between relay nerve and motor nerve
- Impulse passes along motor nerve to effector
Effector in withdrawal reflex
Muscle
Which part of body is relay nerve found?
Spinal cord
Route taken by nerve impulse during reflex action involving eye
- Light stimulates receptors in retina of eye
- Nerve impulses sent through sensory nerve cell of optic nerve to brain (co-ordinator in this reflex)
- Impulse travels along motor nerve cell to effector which is the iris of eye
- On its route, the impulse has to cross small gaps known as synapses
Reflex arc
E.g. pin hits finger
- Finger is sensory receptor
- Sensory neurone
- To spinal cord (relay neurone)
- Motor neurone
- Effector muscle makes arm move away
What happens to electrical impulse as it crosses synapses?
Changes to chemical impulse
In selective reabsorption, what is reabsorbed into blood and what remains in waste?
Blood reabsorb glucose, water and salts
Urea and excess water and salts remain in waste
Kidney structure
Cortex, medulla, nephron, pelvis, ureter
What is capillary knot also known as?
Glomerulus
What stops valves flipping inside out?
Tendons
What leads off from pelvis?
Renal artery (blood to be cleaned), renal vein (clean blood), ureter
