nervous system Flashcards
is a system of nerves involved in thought processes, heartbeat, visual-motor coordination, and so on. is the major instruments that integrates and coordinates all bodily activities. it contains the brain, spinal cord, and other parts that make it possible for us to receive information
nervous system
are specialized cells of the nervous system that conduct impulses. receives and transmits messages.also transmits, messages, impulses, or signals from the sense organs to the brain and from the brain can be visualized having branches, trunks, and roots.
neurons
kinds of neurons
sensory or afferent neuron
motor or efferent neuron
association or interconnecting neuron
transmits impulses from the sense organs to the brain
sensory or afferent neuron
transmits impulses from the brain to the affected organs
motor or efferent neuron
transmits impulses within the brain
association or interconnecting neuron
removes dead neurons and waste products from the nervous system; nourish and insulate neuron; from a fatty, insulating substance called MYELIN
glial cells
major parts of neurons 1. it extend like roots from the cell body to receive incoming messages from the adjoining neurons in short it receives impulses from other neurons 2. cell body
dendrites
it carries messages to other neurons a long, thin part of a neuron that transmits impulses to other neurons from bulb shaped structures called axon terminals or terminal buttons
axon
a fatty substance that encases and insulates axons. facilitating transmission of neural impulses.
myelin
the brain and spinal cord. the decision maker
central nervous system
the part of the nervous system consisting of the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system
peripheral nervous system
contains sensory(afferent) and motor(efferent) neurons. it transmits messages about sight, sounds, smells, temperature, body positions, and so on, to the central nervous system.serves the skeletal muscles and the sense organs.
somatic nervous system
the division of the peripheral nervous system that regulates glands and activities such as heartbeat, respiration, digestion, and dilation of the pupils. also has two branches the sympathetic and parasympathetic
autonomic nervous system (ANS)
the branch of ans that is most active during emotional responses such as fear and anxiety, that spends the body’s reserve energy
sympathetic division
