Nervous System Flashcards
Will not be a written answer question
What is a nerve net?
The symmetrical web like system animals have to connect neurons throughout the body
What is cephalization
concentration of the nervous system at the head end
What is centralization
presence of a central nervous system distinct from a peripheral nervous system
What are the two parts of the central nervous system
Brain
Spinal Cord
What are the three parts of the Peripheral nervous system
Cranial nerves
Ganglia outside CNS
Spinal Nerves
What are the branching structures around the neuron?
Dendrites
True or False: Multipolar Neuron = is single directional?
True!
What is the long wire that connects two neurons?
Axon
What are Neuroglia?
Support cells
What happens during the Peripheral Nervous System going into the CNS?
Stimuli -> Sensory receptor -> sensory neuron -> CNS
What happens after the stimuli leaving the CNS?
Motor Neuron -> either Autonomic nervous system or somatic (motor) system
When something hits your knee what leads to the reaction of it jerking out?
The sensory receptor feels hit -> travels to sensory neuron -> sends signal to spinal cord -> spinal cord sends signal to motor neurons -> muscles contract
What are two kinds of neurotransmitter
Excitatory
Inhibitory
What is a Excitatory neurotransmitter
excite a receiving cell (kinda self explanatory)
What is an inhibitory neurotransmitter
inhibits a receiving cell’s activity by decreasing its ability to develop action potentials
