Nervous System Flashcards
Nervous system
The brain, spinal cord, and nerves – responsible for movement and sensory reception
Central nervous system
The brain and spinal cord – “the body’s decision maker”
Peripheral nervous system
Comprised of the somatic and autonomic NS – gathers info from body and sends to brain and vice versa — physically the nerves that branch from the spinal cord
Afferent neurons
AKA sensory neurons – convey info from body tissue and sensory receptors to brain and spinal cord
Efferent neurons
AKA motor neurons – convey “instructions” from CNS to body’s muscles and glands
The neurons in the brain that facilitate communication between sensory and motor neurons, very complex
Interneurons
Part of the Peripheral nervous system, allows us to control skeletal muscles
Somatic nervous system
Autonomously controls internal organ muscles
Autonomic nervous system
Function of autonomic nervous system – arousal (fight or flight response)
Sympathetic nervous system
Function of autonomic nervous system – relaxes and conserves energy ; works with SNS for equilibrium
Parasympathetic nervous system
Made of up of glands that secrete hormones that affect the body
Endocrine system
Helps create fight or flight response by secreting epinephrine and norepinephrine
Adrenal gland
Releases hormones from growth hormones to oxytocin – can affect other glands
Pituitary gland
Hormones
Chemical messages that cause varying effects in the body – travel through blood
