Nervous System Flashcards
Central Nervous System
The division of the nervous system that consists of the brain and the spinal cord. It acts like the boss, sending orders to other parts of the body.
Peripheral Nervous System
The division of the nervous system that includes nerves traveling to and from the brain, like a highway
Nervous System
A complex body system made of cells and nerves working together to control your body
Somantic Nervous System
Part of the motor nervous system that allows us to do tasks we consciously think think about, like picking up a book or opening a window.
Brain
an organ made up of a mass of nerve tissues. It is our centre of conscious awareness and allows us to have higher mental processes.
Spinal cord
extension of the brain which passes messages to and from the brain. It connects nerves to the peripheral nervous system
Autonomic nervous system
involuntary part of the PNS that transmits information to and from internal organs and helps control vital functions
sympathetic nervous system
the fight and flight response which prepares the body to respond to threat
parasympathetic nervous system
the rest and digest response which restores the body back to its usual state of relaxation
Parasympathetic examples
constrict pupils
increase saliva production
decrease heart rate
dilates blood vessels
constricts bronchi
increases stomach and intestine motility
contracts bladder
