Nervous System Flashcards
What cells are in the nervous tissue
neurones and glial cells
What do cell bodies do?
Where are they in the body?
make up the grey matter of the nervous system
At the periphery of the brain and centre of the spinal cord
What do axons and dendrites form?
White matter of the nervous system
Where are axons
deep in brain
What are axons surrounded by
a membrane called axolemma
Axon neurons may be what
myelinated or unmyelinated
Explain the difference between myelinated and unmyelinated neurons
Myelinated have a myelin sheath which consists of Schwann cells that make nerve transmutation rapid
Unmyelinated neurons have several axons that are embedded in one Schwann cell making the nerve transmutation slower
What do dendrites do
a short process that receives and carries incoming nerve impulses towards cell bodies
How is dendrites structure different to axons
They are shorter and branching
What do dendrites make up
synapses in motor neurons
they are sensory receptors
name the 3 bundles of nerve fibres
endoneurium - delicate tissue surrounding each fibre
perineurium - smooth tissue surrounding bundles
epineurium - fibrous tissues surrounding bundles
What are afferent nerves
what are efferent nerves
sensory nerves
motor nerves
What are the two types of motor nerves
somatic - involved in voluntary and reflex skeletal muscle contractions
autonomic nerves - involved in cardiac and smooth muscle contractions and glandular secretions
What is neuroglia
are glial cells that support neurons of the CNS
What are the 4 types of glial cells
astrocytes
oligodendrocytes
ependymal cells
microglia
