Nervous System Flashcards
How do animals increase their chance of survival?
By responding to change in their external environement
what is a stimulus?
A change in the internal or extertnal environment
What are receptors?
Detect stimuli
What are effectors?
bring about response to stimuli
What are the 2 types of nervous system?
Central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
What are the 2 types of peripheral nervous system?
- Somatic nervous system - controls conscious decisions
- Autonomic nervous system- controls unconscious activities
What are the 2 types of autonomic nervous system
- Sympathetic- gets the body ready for action, fight’ or flight ‘
- Parasympathetic- calms the body down, it’s ‘rest and digest’
What is a reflex?
A reflex is where a the body responds to a stimulus without making a conscious decision
What is a reflex arc?
pathway of neurones linking receptors and effectors
Give an example of a reflex arc for detection of heat?
- thermoreceptors in the skin detect heat stimulus
- sensory neurone carries impulse to relay neurone
- relay neurone carries impulse of motor neurone
- motor neurone sends impulses to the effector
- muscle contracts to withdraw your hand and stop damage
What are 3 key characteristics of nervous system communication?
- when impulse reaches end of neurone, neurotransmitters are released to target cells so the response is localised
- response is short lived as neurotransmitters are quickly removed
- electrical impulses are really fast so the response is rapid
What is tropism?
Tropism is the response of a plant to a directional stimulus
positive tropism
growth towards the stimulus
negative tropism
growth away from the stimulus
phototropism
growth of a plant in response to light
