Nervous System Flashcards
What is the brain?
organ that organizes and processes information from your senses and makes decisions
What are the main parts of the nervous system?
- Detecting what is going on in the environment around you using your 5 senses.
- Responding or moving, based on what is happening around you.
What does the spinal cord do?
Pathway to send information to and from the brain to the rest of the body
What is a stimulus,
Anything that has an effect on a living thing
For example: heat
What is a response
How we react to a stimulus
What is a receptor
nerve endings that detect stimuli
What is a neuron?
Special cells in the brain that can transmit messages through electrical impulses
What is short/long term memory?
Short - A memory that remains for a short time period (seconds, mins hours)
Long - A memory that can be recalled automatically or a long period of time.
What is a reflex? Example?
A reflex is an automatic response that is not transmitted via the brain.
For example, we automatically move our hand away when we touch something hot
How does input from senses flow?
Nerves → Spinal → Brain
How do responses flow work?
Brain → Spinal Cord → Nerves
