Digestive System Flashcards
What are the two types of digestion?
Mechanical Digestion and Chemical Digestion
How does mechanical digestion work
By Physically breaking food into pieces
How does chemical digestion work?
Using acids and chemicals to break food apart
What does the liver do?
Make bile - breaks down fat stored in the Gall Bladder
What does the Gallbladder do?
Stores bile from the liver. Releases bile into small intestine
What does the Pancreas do?
Manufactures chemicals to break down food in the small intestines
What is the main function of the digestive system?
Break food and water into smaller parts the body can use
What is peristalsis?
series of wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract
What is Chyme?
the acidic fluid which passes from the stomach to the small intestine
What are helper organs?
Essential organs that secrete chemicals for digestion. Food DOES NOT enter these organs
Trace the pathway of food digestion
Mouth -> Esophagus->Stomach->Small Intestine->Large Intestine
How does the food group: Simple Carbohydrate (candy break down in the digestive system?
SUGARY FOODS INITIAL burst with crash afterwards
How does the food group: Complex Carbohydrates (pasta, grains) break down in the digestive system?
slow energy CLIMB , then slow energy DECLINE
How does the food group: meats break down in the digestive system?
STEADY energy release
How does the food group: fats break down in the digestive system
LITTLE NO release of energy, then burst of ENERGY
