Nervous System Flashcards
What is the CNS
Central nervous system - everything inside the spine and skull, brain, and spinal cord. poor at fixing themselves
What is the PNS
everything outside the spine and skull, is plastic,
what is the somatic nervous system
controls voluntary movements
what is the autonomic nervous system
controls involuntary movements, is made of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
what the Sympathetic nervous system
fight or flight
what is the parasympathetic nervous system
rest and digest
what is the ‘circuit of movement’
sensory, integration, motor output
what are neurons
nerve cells that are electrically excitable cells
what are glial cells
non-neuronal cells in the nervous - system that maintain homeostasis
Describe how an AP is sent
if stimulus reaches threshold AP is sent, information coded by rate of firing.
Name the types of Glial cells
Schwann cells - form myelin sheath
Oligodendrocyte - forms myelin sheath in CNS
Microglial cells - The brain’s immune system
Ependymal cells - make up the ependyma which secretes cerebrospinal fluid
Astrocyte - manage the environments of the brain
what is grey and white matter
white is the axon-dense sections, grey is mainly cell bodies - pink in fresh tissue
