Nervous system Flashcards
Neuron
a nerve cell that transmits information in the form of electrical events that release neurotransmitters
afferent neuron
a type of neuron that carries information from the body to the CNS
Efferent neuron
carries the information from the CNS to the body
Interneuron
a relay between different types of neurons
The system comprising of all the nervous pathways outside the CNS
PNS peripheral nervous system
Gathers sensory like movement information from the body to send to the CNS
Somatic (SNS)
Sending unconscious signals and it is not controlled by the brain
Autonomic nervous system (ANS)
A division of the ANS that accelerates/excites the body’s systems. The fight or flight response
Sympathetic division
A division of the ANS that slows and relaxes the body
Parasympathetic division
The Central Nervous System parts
brain and spinal cord
Reflex pathway
The sensory receptor > the sensory neuron > spinal cord > interneuron > motor neuron > muscle
Where is pain detected
the brain
Nervous system damage effects
loss of movement or feeling, interruption of the flow of information
Quadrapaligic
Loss of feeling everywhere but the head and neck
Paraplegic
Loss of feeling in the lower body
Sensory neurons
Sends information to brain and spinal cord
Motor neuron
Initiates actions from brain and spinal cord
Dendrites
extensions from the cell body of a neuron that receive input from other cells
Cell body
Where the DNA is stored
Myelin Sheath
Type of glial cell that covers the axon and speeds up the transmission of signals
