Brain Structures Flashcards
Hindbrain
Section of the brain that is connected to the spinal cord; extends to the midbrain; communicates to the rest of the body
Medulla
the part that connects to the spinal cord; regulates main bodily functions; associated with Parkinson’s, stroke, and brain trauma
Pons
The bridge between the medulla and other areas; involved in sleep, breathing, swallowing, eye movements, facial sensations and expression
Locus coerus
A type of long neurons that produce norepinephrine in the pons
Cerebellum
lower structure of the brain that is responsible for motor cooridination
Reticular formation
Regulates the sleep awake cycle
Midbrain
small section of the brain that produces dopamine
Forebrain
Largest section of the brain that covers the rest and operates contralaterally
Cerebral cortex
part of the brain that contains all the gray matter; sits on top
Thalamus
found in the middle of the brain; relay sensory information to the forebrain
hypothalamus
above the thalamus; responsible for the hormones that make up the endrocrine system
pituitary gland
producing the starting hormones for the endocrine system
Limbic system
system that forms memories; learns from experiences
Amygdala
processes emotional information
Hippocampus
temporary storage for memory; emotional memory
