Nervous System Flashcards
Cerebrum
Brain Region Responsible for Cognitive thinking
Cerebellum
Brain Region Responsible for Coordination. learned skill movement and timing.
Brainstem
Brain Region that controls autonomic body functions
Hippocampus
Brain Region responsible for memory
Amygdala
Brain region responsible for emotions
Dura mater
The meninges of the brain are the connective tissue that cover the brain and spinal cord and is composed of three layers. Which is the outermost layer?
Central Nervous System
brain and spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System
Nerves to rest of body
Motor Nerves
carry messages from the brain to the body
Sensory Nerves
carry messages from the body to the brain
Medulla oblongata
lower part of brainstem. controls breathing, regulates heartbeat, adjusts blood flow
Pons
upper brainstem. relays sensory info between cerebrum and cerebellum. helps regulate respiration
Corpus Callosum
bundle of fibers that connects right and left hemisphere
Striatum
A center of pleasure(Addiction). Responsible for planning, motivation. and reward perception
Spinal Cord
connects brain to PNS
Neurons
The building block of the brain. Connections with electrochemical process
Glial Cells
Astrocytes, Microglia, Oligodendrocytes. Suporting Cells
Astrocytes
Predominant building block of the blood brain barrier. Regulate cerebral blood flow. Removes waste and secure neuron to their blood supply
Microglia
Brain cell type activated under pathological conditions including alzheimer’s
Oligodendrocytes
Form myelin sheaths and support axons. Insulate axons
Brain Microvascular endothelial cells
Part of what makes up the Blood brain barrier
Pericytes
communicates with endothelial cells via the gap junctions. Regulate endothelial cells, induce BBB tightness
Somatic Nervous System
Sensation and voluntary actions
Autonomic Nervous System
involuntary actions, regulates blood vessels, glands and internal organs. sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system and enteric nervous system
Sympathetic Nervous System
Fight or Flight. Heart beat faster, breathing and digestion slows, blood pressure increases, shunt blood to muscles, uses energy. Acetycholine and norepinephrine
Parasympathetic nervous system
Rest and digest. Nonemergency response. Digestion, maintains blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing at low level. Acetycholine
Enteric nervous system
In the wall of the gut. Controls gastrointestinal movements.
Brain tumor
A disease in which cells grow uncontrollably in the brain. Dignosised by CT
Computed Tomography
location and type of tumor. Detection of swelling or bleeding
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
pictures of tumor located near bone.3D image
Positron Emission Tomography
recuurent brain tumors. Difference between Benign malignant tumors
