Nervous System Flashcards
What is a nerve impulse
An electrical signals that passes along nerve cells
Central nervous system consists
Brain + spinal cord
Peripheral central system consists
All the nerves in the body
Sensory neurons
Sense organs to CNS
Relay neurons
CNS to connect sensory and motor neurons
Motor neuron es
CNS to effector
Reflex arc
Stimulus -> sensory neurons -> relay neurons in CNS -> motor neuron-> effector -> response
What is a synapse
Junction that neuron forms with another cell for communication
How is the impulse transmitted between two neurons
1) an impulse arrives at the end of the presynaptic neurons
2) vesicles move towards, and fuse with the presynaptic membrane.this release neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft
3) the neurotransmitter diffuse across the synaptic cleft (down a concentration gradient)
4) neurotransmitter attach to the receptors in the post synaptic membrane
5) this triggers an impulse which travels along the postsynaptic neurons
6) neurotransmitter are recycled or destroyed once an impulse is sent
What is the purpose of the synapse
To ensure that impulse travel in one direction
Give 3 examples of drugs that affect the synapse
Alcohol
Heroin
Nicotine
