Nervous System Flashcards
What two parts make up the nervous system?
The central nervous system (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)
What is the central nervous system?
Consists of the brain and spinal cord that contain all internuerons and glial cells ( oligodendrocytes)
What is the peripheral nervous system (PNS)
Consists of 31 pairs of spinal nerves that carry signals to and from the spinal cord and 2 cranial nerves that carry signals to and from the brain.
What subdivisions does the (PNS) contain?
The somatic and autonomic subdivisions.
What are afferent nerves?
Nerves that carry sensory information to the CNS
What are efferent nerves?
Nerves that carry motor messages away from the CNS to muscles and glands.
What are the somatic nerves?
Nerves that carry signals related to head, trunk and limbs.
What are autonomic nerves?
Nerves that carry signals between internal organs
What is the autonomic system divided into?
The sympathetic and parasympathetic.
What are parasympathetic nerves?
Are nerves that slow down the body when it is in a state of calm and relaxation
What are sympathetic nerves
Nerves that work best during a state of high teens awareness, stress or danger. ( fight or flight ) response
What is the brain divided into?
The hind brain, the midbrain and the forebrain.
What is the hind brain?
Contains the medulla oblongata( vital take such as breathing)
Cerebellum ( coordinates voluntary movement)
Pons (directs signals between cerebellum and forebrain)
What is the midbrain?
Coordinates reflex response to sight and sound
What is the forebrain?
The most developed region that contains the Cerebrum(info processing) Olfactory bulb (smell) Thalamus ( sensory relay) Hypothalamus
