Digestive System Flashcards
What is the digestive system
A long tube where food is broken down and nutrients are absorbed
Where and how tried digestion start?
In the mouth, salivary glands secrete saliva and contains salivary amylase. Amylase starts the digestion of carbs
What does the stomach do when food enters?
The stomach is responsible for digestion proteins by an enzyme pepsin, it also releases gastric juice that dissolves foods into a thick chyme.
What is the function of the small intestine?
Has a large surface area for digestion and it is where most nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine
How does the small intestine absorb. Nutrients ?
By finger like projections called villi that contain smaller microvilli on its wall
What 3 sections of the small intestine are there?
The first part, Duodenum, the second,Jejunum and last ileum
What is the function of the pancreas and what glands does it contain
Exorcine glands that release enzymes and endocrine glands that produce hormones
What function does the pancreas have?
Break down carb, proteins, fats and nucleus acids. It also secretes bicarbonate to nuetralise chyme
What is the function of the gallbladder?
Stores excess bile from the liver and release it unit the small intestine.
What is the function of the liver?
To secrete bile, store excess glucose as glycogen.
What are enzymes that digest carbohydrates called?
Salivary amylase, pancreatic amylase and dissaccharidases
What are protein digesting enzymes called?
Pepsins, trypsin and chymotrypsin, carboxypeptidase and aminopeptidase
What are fat digesting enzymes called
Lipase
What are nucleiec acid digesting enzymes called?
Pancreatic nucleases
Intestinal nucleases
What is the function of the large intestine?
The large intestine is responsible for water reabsorption, ion uptake and faeces formation.
