Nervous System 1 Overview Flashcards
what is inluded in the nervous system and what two types of cells are there?
The nervous system is made up of ALL the neural tissue in the body which consists of these two cells:
1. Neurons
2.Neurogila
What do neurons do?
send and reveive signals
What do neuroglia do?
support and protect neurons
What two areas is the nervous system divided into?
- Central Nervous System (CNS)
- Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Central Nervous system
a. what does it consist of?
b.what is it’s purpose?
a. the CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord
b.its purpose is to recieve and process information.
“Responsible for integrating, processing, and coordinating sensory data and motor comands”
Peripheral Nervous System
a.What does it consist of?
b.what is it’s function?
a. The PNS consits of cranial and spinal nerves
b.delivers sensory information to the CNS and carries motor commands to the peripheral tissues and systems
What are the two main divisions of the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)?
a. Afferent (sensory)
b.Efferent (motor)
Affernt
a.what is it also known as?
b.describe this pathway
A.Sensory
b.Carries sensory info from receptors in the PNS to the CNS
(from PNS to CNS)
Efferent
a.what is it also known as?
b.describe this pathway
a. Motor
b.carries motor commands from the CNS to the PNS muslces and glands
(From CNS to PNS)
what is the efferent pathway divided into?
- Somatic Nervous System
2.Autonomic Nervous System
What does the Somatic nervous system control?
controls voluntary and involunatary Skeletal muscle contrction
What does the Autonomic Nervous System control?
INVOLUNTARY automatic regulation of smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glandular secretions
What are the two divisions of the autonomic nervous system?
- Sympathetic
2.Parasympathetic
Sympathetic Division (SNS)
Fight or flight
-Stimulting effect
Parasympathetic division (PSNS)
Rest or digest
-relaxing effect
