Nervous System 1 Flashcards
what is Homeostasis?
The ability of the body to maintain a constant environment.
4 components of homeostasis mechanism?
Receptors - detect changes in the body
Communicating Pathways - allow receptors to pass on messages from the control center to receptor
Control Centre- analyses change and decide a response
Effectors- tissues or organs that produce a response ( reverse initial change)
what is negative feedback and importance
counteracts change to maintain homeostatic environment e.g. fall in blood pressure - baroreceptors detect- axons send message to control centre - increase in heart activity - rise in blood pressure
what is positive feedback
more rare occasions e.g. childbirth, baby’s head on cervix - stretch receptors - control centre - oxytocin - uterus muscle contracts,
