Nervous - CNS Flashcards
What does the cerebrum do
The cerebral cortex is our conscious mind. This is where voluntary actions, including movement, speech, and solving problems, occurs. What exists here is the conscious awareness of smells, sights, hot, and cold
What does the cerebellum do
The cerebellum coordinates muscle movement and balance, creating a smooth motion as well as coordination
What does the medulla do
The medulla controls involuntary functions like breathing and regulation of blood pressure; kind of primitive like the spinal cord
What does the hypothalamus do
The hypothalamus controls homeostasis; maintains the internal environment no matter what is going on outside - hormone levels, the balance of electrolytes, temp, and the pituitary gland
What does the spinal cord do
The spinal cord is primarily involved in primitive and reflexive actions.
