Nervous and Endocrine System Flashcards
The Central Nervous System or CNS is…
the brain and spinal cord
The peripheral nervous system is….
all the nerves as they come off the spinal cord and innervate the rest of the body
What are the four main functions of the nervous system?
1 - transmit sensory information to the brain
2 - control moto function of the body
3 - maintain consciousness
4 - manage basic bodily functions
The cerebellum sits towards the base of the brain posteriorly. Toward the brainstem. The cerebellum is responsible for what two things in the body?
1 - coordination
2 - balance
What is the difference between the cerebellum and cerebrum?
The cerebellum controls coordination and balance and the cerebrum is the rest of the brain
What does the right hemisphere of the brain do?
Controls the left side of the body and the left hemisphere controls the right side of the body
What is the endocrine system responsible for?
hormones in the body released from glands
The pineal gland (as part of the endocrine system) in your brain does what?
impacts your sleep-wake cycle or circaian rythym
The pituitary gland (as part of the endocrine system) in your brain does what?
secretes alot of hormones which help regulate a large number of other glands in the body and are part of the endocrine system
Where are the thyroid and thymus glands found?
Neck
The thyroid regulates….
metabolism
Adrenals are located where and perform what two functions?
On either of the kidneys (superior or at the top) and have 2 functions:
- The adrenal cortex—the outer part of the gland—produces hormones that are vital to life, such as cortisol (which helps regulate metabolism and helps your body respond to stress) and aldosterone (which helps control blood pressure).
- The inner part, or adrenal medulla, produces hormones called Catecholamines. The adrenal glands make large amounts of catecholamines as a reaction to stress. The main catecholamines are epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine (noradrenaline), and dopamine.
What is the function of the pancreas in the endocrine system?
Regulates blood sugar
The thymus…
regulates the immune system
