Describe the location of dermatomes of T8, T10 and T12
T8: skin between xiphoid process + umbilicus
T10: skin of the umbilicus
T12: midpoint of the groin
Which region is pain from the abdominal part of the foregut referred to?
Epigastric region ( dermatomes T5-9)
Which region is pain from the midgut referred to?
Umbilical region
Which region is pain from the hindgut referred to?
Pubic region
What is referred pain?
When sensory info. comes to spinal cord from 1 location but is interpreted by the CNS as coming from another location innervated by the same segmental supply
Where is pain referred to in early appendicitis?
Dermatome of T10 in umbilical region
Where is pain referred to in late appendicitis?
Right iliac fossa, focal pain due to irritation of parietal peritoneum
“McBurney’s Point”
Demonstrate palpation of the abdominal aortic pulse (in umbilical region)
Patient to lie flat in supine + expose abdomen
AA can be felt pulsing powerfully near lumbar vertebral bodies above the umbilicus just left of the midline.
Use 2 fingers from each hand together.
How would you palpate the femoral artery?
At mid-inguinal point between ASIS + pubic symphysis.
Where is pain referred to in inflammation of the gall bladder/ pancreas?
Shoulder tip: C4 dermatome
