Nerves of the Upper Limb Flashcards
How many cervical spinal nerves are there?
8
What are the two enlargements?
Cervical and lumbar enlargements
What gives rise to the major plexuses of the upper and lower limbs?
Cervical and lumbar enlargements
What is the major plexus of the upper limb
Brachial plexus
What ventral rami make up the brachial plexus?
C5-T1
What muscles does the brachial plexus innervate?
All upper limb muscles except the trapezius m.
What are the rami of the brachial plexus?
C5-T1
What are the trunks of the brachial plexus?
Upper, middle and lower
What are the divisions of the brachial plexus?
Anterior and posterior
What are the cords of the brachial plexus?
Medial lateral and posterior
Where do the cords form?
In the axillary region
What are the 5 terminal branches of the brachial plexus?
musculocutaneous, median, ulnar, axillary and radial branches
What are the cord levels of the musculocutaneous nerve?
C5-C7
What are the cord levels of the ulnar nerve?
C8-T1
What are the cord levels of the median nerve?
C5-T1 (same as the radial nerve)
What muscles does the median nerve innervate?
Majority of anterior forearm, thenar eminence, lumbricals 1 and 2.
What are the cord levels of the radial nerve?
C5-T1 (same as the median nerve)
What muscles does the ulnar nerve innervate?
Majority of the hand muscles, half of flexor digitorum profundus and flexor carpi ulnaris
What muscles does the radial nerve innervate?
Posterior arm, posterior forearm
Through where does the radial nerve pass?
Radial groove of the humerus
What are the cord levels of the axillary nerve?
C5-C6
What muscles does the axillary nerve innervate?
Deltoid and teres minor mm.
Which nerves supply sensation to the hand?
Median, radial, ulnar nerves
Where does the dorsal scapular nerve originate?
Ventral ramus of C5
Where does the long thoracic nerve originate?
Ventral rami C5-C7
Where does the suprascapular nerve originate?
Upper trunk
What does the dorsal scapular nerve innervate?
Levator scapulae, rhomboids mm.
What does the long thoracic nerve innervate?
Serratus anterior m.
What does the suprascapular nerve innervate?
Supraspinatus and infraspinatus mm.
Where does the medial pectoral nerve originate?
The medial cord
Where does the lateral pectoral nerve originate?
The lateral cord
What does the medial pectoral nerve innervate?
Pectoralis minor and major mm.
What does the lateral pectoral nerve innervate?
Pectoralis major m.
What 3 nerves branch off of the posterior cord?
Upper subscapular, thoracodorsal and lower subscapular nn.
What does the upper subscapular nerve innervate?
Subscapularis m (along with lower subscapular nerve)
What does the thoracodorsal nerve innervate?
Latissimus dorsi m.
What does the lower subscapular nerve innervate?
Subscapularis (along with upper subscapular nerve) and teres major mm.
