Nerves Flashcards
Which cranial nerves come form the midbrain?
CN III - oculomotor nerve (interpeduncular fossa)
CN IV - trochlear nerve (from behind)
Which cranial nerves come from the pons?
CN V - trigeminal nerve
CN VI - abducens nerve
CN VII - facial nerve
CN VIII - vestibulocochlear nerve
Which cranial nerves come from the medulla?
CN IX - glossopharyngeal nerve
CN X - vagus nerve
CN XI - accessory nerve
CN XII - hypoglossal nerve
What does the first cranial nerve innervate?
Special sense = smell
What does the second cranial nerve innervate?
Special sense = vision
What does the oculomotor cranial nerve innervate?
Motor = superior, inferior + medial rectus, inferior oblique and levator palpebrae superioris Parasympathetic = to pupil of the eye + focuses the lens
What does the trochlear cranial nerve innervate?
Motor = superior oblique + trochlear
What does the trigeminal cranial nerve innervate?
Motor = muscles of mastication
General sensation = face + mouth
What does the abducens cranial nerve innervate?
Motor = lateral rectus
What does the facial cranial nerve innervate?
Motor = stapedius, muscles of facial expression
Special sensation = taste to anterior 2/3 of tongue
Parasympathetic = submandibular, sublingual + nasolacrimal gland
What does the vestibulocochlear cranial nerve innervate?
Special sensation = hearing, vestibular input about acceleration and position
What does the glossopharyngeal cranial nerve innervate?
Motor = stylopharyngeus (swallow + gag reflex)
Special sense = taste to posterior 1/3 of tongue
General sensation = posterior 1/3 of tongue, oropharynx and Eustachian tube
Parasympathetic = parotid gland
What does the vagus cranial nerve innervate?
Motor = pharynx + larynx
Special sensation = taste to pharynx + epiglottis
Parasympathetic = thoracic + abdominal viscera (cardio, pulm, GI)
What does the accessory cranial nerve innervate?
Motor = sternocleidomastoid + trapezius
What does the hypoglossal cranial nerve innervate?
Motor = muscles of the tongue (except palatoglossus)
