Nerve palsies in limbs Flashcards
claw hand is a presentation of what palsy?
klumpkes
describe how erbs palsy will look?
> shoulder adducted and internally rotated
elbow extended and pronated
wrist flexed
what is damaged in erbs palsy?
the upper trunk of the brachial plexus
what can cause an axillary nerve palsy?
> pressure on posterior cord
> humeral neck fracture
how may an axillary nerve palsy present?
> loss of shoulder abduction
> sensory deficit in the badge area
what can cause a radial nerve palsy?
> humeral shaft fracture
> exposure of proximal radius
how may a radial palsy present?
> at wrist with loss of sensation
in forearm with loss of finger extension
in arm with loss of wrist extension and sensory loss
in axilla with loss of elbow extension, wrist extension and sensation loss
what can cause median nerve palsies?
> carpal tunnel syndrome
> wrist lacerations
how may median nerve palsies present?
> thenar wasting
> sensory loss over the collar aspect of the thumb
what can cause ulnar nerve palsies?
> fracture to the humeral condyles
> wrist lacerations
how may an ulnar nerve palsy present?
> forments test positive
claw hand
muscle wasting
sensory loss over the little finger
what can cause carpal tunnel syndrome?
> swellings (lipoma, fibroma, ganglion)
inflammatory (TB, gout, amyloid, rheumatoid)
developmental
trauma (distal radius fracture)
metabolic (hypothyroidism, mucopdysaccharidoses, pregnancy)
how may carpal tunnel syndrome present?
> median nerve distribution paraesthesia and nocturnal pain)
wasting of the thenar muscles
phalens and tinnels +ve
where is the cubital tunnel?
between the medial epicondyle and the olecranon
how does cubital tunnel syndrome present?
> numbness on the ulnar side of the hand
> difficulty with fine tasks
