Nerve conduction - transmitter substances Flashcards
What are transmitter substances?
Chemicals produced by the body that communicate between neurons (i.e., across synapses). They differ primarily in distance between cells that secrets the chemical and the receptors that detect it and in how many neurons it influences
Neurotransmitters
Released by terminal button and detected by receptors on membrane of neuron across synaptic cleft
Neuromodulators
Released by terminal buttons in greater quantities and are more widely dispersed influencing many neurons in an area of the brain
Hormones
Most produced by endocrine glands, but some produced by cells in stomach, intestines, kidney, and brain. Released into extracellular space and dispersed by blood stream
Neurons that have receptors for hormones are called what?
Target calls. Hormones affect the functioning of the cells that have the receptors.
