Nerve Clinical Terms Flashcards
A disorder affecting the ability to speak or read
Aphasia
A disturbance of balance that in a severe cases leaves the individual unable to stand without assistance. Caused by problems affecting the cerebellum
Ataxia
Condition in which the blood supply to a portion of the brain is blocked off
Cerebrovascular accident or stroke
A stable chronic state of consciousness characterized by deficits in memory, spatial orientation , language, or personality
Dementia
The destruction of the myelin sheaths around axons in CNS and PNS
Demyelination
A disease that results from a bacterial infection of the respiratory tract. Among other affects the bacterial toxins damage Schwann cells and cause PNS demyelination
Diphtheria
The injection of anesthetic into the epidural space of the spinal cord to eliminate sensory and motor innervation by spinal nerves
Epidural block
Bacterial infection that begins in sensory nerves of the skin and gradually progresses to a motor paralysis of the same regions
Hansen’s disease
Inherited disease marked by a progressive deterioration of mental abilities and by motor disturbances
Huntingtons disease
Inflammation of the meninges involving the spinal cord and/or brain; generally caused by bacterial or viral pathogens
Meningitis
Disease marked by recurrent incidents of demyelination affecting axons in the optic nerve, brain, and or spinal cord
Multiple sclerosis
A progressive, degenerative disorder affecting motor neurons of the spinal cord, brain stem, and cerebral hemispheres; Lou Gehrig disease
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; ALS
