Clinical Terms Flashcards
Cancer
Illness characterized by gene mutations leading to the formation of malignant tumors and metastasis
Carcinogen
A cancer causing agent
Benign tumor
Mass or swelling in which the cells usually remain within the epithelium or a connective tissue capsule; rarely life threatening
DNA fingerprinting
Technique for identifying an individual on the basis of repeating nucleotide sequences in his or her DNA
Genetic engineering
Research on and techniques for changing the genetic make-up of an organism
Malignant tumor
Mass or swelling in which cells no longer respond to normal control mechanisms but divide rapidly and spread
Metastasis
Spread of malignant cells into distant tissues and organs, where secondary tumors subsequently develop
Normal saline
Solution that approximates the normal osmotic concentration of extra cellular fluids
Primary tumor
Abnormal mass where cancer cells first developed and the source of secondary tumors
Recombinant DNA
DNA creating by inserting (splicing) a specific gene from one organism into the DNA strand of another
Secondary tumor
Colony of cancerous cells resulting from metastasis
