Nerve cells and impulses Flashcards
What is the CNS and PNS?
CNS is the central nervous system which consist of the spine and brain
PNS is the peripheral nervous system are nerves that connect to the central nervous system such as receptors, glands and muscles.
Name the different types of neurons
Sensory neuron: carrying messages from receptors to sense organs or in the skin
Motor neuron: messages to the muscles and glands
What are the different structure types of neurons?
Multi polar neurons
Bi polar neurons
Uni polar neurons
What are the function of Nodes of Ranvier?
Acts as a insulator
protects the axon from damage
acts as an insulator
What helps repair injured fibres?
neurilemma
What helps repair injured fibres?
neurilemma
What is a neuron?
a nerve cell
What is a nerve fibre and nerve?
Any long extension of cytoplasm of a nerve cell body is a nerve fibre
A nerve is bundle of nerve fibres held together by connective tissue
What is a synapse?
Junction between adjacent neurons is called a synapse where nerve impulses are passed from neuron to neuron
How does transmission across synapses occur?
Neurotransmitters diffuse across the gap and attach to the receptors on the membrane
Which way does transmission across synapses occur?
Impulses only travel one direction - from axon to dendrite or from axon to cell body
