Homeostasis of body temperature and body fluids Flashcards
what temperature does the body constantly have to be at and how is this achieved?
36.8 degrees Celsius
heat gained by the body must be exactly equal the heat lost from the body
What is thermoregulation?
Maintaining the balance between heat production and heat loss
What is metabolic rate and what effects it?
Rate at which energy is released by the break down of food
exercise, stress and body temperature affect metabolic rate
What are the two types of thermoreceptors?
central and peripheral thermoreceptors
Describe the two types of peripheral thermoreceptors
cold and heat receptors
cold receptor detects temperatures lower than normal
heat receptors detect temperatures higher than normal
Where is information about temperature received?
hypothalamus
How is temperature in the skin regulated?
The diameter of blood vessels can increase or decrease the flow of blood near the surface
Sweating, when you sweat the sweat evaporating of your skin has a cooling effect. cooling of the skin results in cooling of the blood flowing through the skin
