NERVE AND MUSCLE CELLS Flashcards
NERVE CELLS what are they ?
nerve cells are specialised to transmit electrical impulses around the body AND synapses are the gaps between the nerve cells
EUKARYOTIC CELSS
key parts of the nerve cells are ?
axon- part of the cell that electrical signals travel along
have long nerve cells to increase the distance that the electrical signals travel
myelin sheath-surrounds the nerve cell. stops electrical nerve signals leaking out of the nerve cell which increases the speed of transimissions of elecrical signals
dendrites-branches of a nerve cell
several dendrites spread outwards of the cell body to transfer electrical messages to other neurones
MUSCLE CELLS what are they and what do they contain
Produce motion and force
protein fibres- within the cell can contract to make the muscles move
mitochondria-generate a lot of energy for motion
