Nephrotic Syndrome Flashcards
1
Q
Define nephrotic syndrome
A
Oedema (typically affecting whole body)
Proteinuria (usually >3-4g/day)
Hypoalbuminaemia
Hyperlipidaemia
2
Q
What is the basic defect in nephrotic syndrome?
A
Impaired permeability of filtration membrane resulting in loss of proteins (especially albumin, it is the smallest) into the urine
Other effects stem from this proteinuria
3
Q
List 4 common causes of nephrotic syndrome
A
DM
Some forms of glomerulonephritis, e.g. minimal change disease, membranous glomerulonephritis
Amyloid deposition
Inherited abnormalities in proteins linking podocytes
