ATN Flashcards
What is the most common renal cause of ARF?
ATN
What changes occur in ATN?
Tubular epithelium dies first during ischaemia
Epithelial cells degenerate and detach from tubular BM
GFR falls
Is ATN reversible?
Yes, with dialysis
What is one of the hallmarks of recovery in ATN?
Diuresis
What histological characteristics are seen in ATN?
Granular eosinophilic trails of debris due to sloughing of dead tubule cells
Glomeruli normal
When does hypoperfusion cause ATN?
Only when severe and protracted enough to cause necrosis of tubular epithelium (GFR fall in hypoperfusion is initially due to low perfusion, not tubule cell necrosis)
Give examples of some causes of toxic ATN
Heavy metals, e.g. mercury
Some antibiotics
Some chemotherapeutics
