Nephrology Flashcards
> 80% is preceeded by gastroenteritis caused by shiga toxin-producing E coli O157:H7 in developed countries
Hemolytic uremic syndrome
Most common cause of acute renal failure in young children
Hemolytic uremic syndrome
Helmet cells
HUS
Burr cells
HUS
Fragmented rbcs
HUS
Potter facies
Polycystic kidney disease
( low set ears, micrognathia, flat nose, limb defects, growth deficiency)
( hypertension, hyponatremia, impaired renal function, hepatic fibrosis)
Most common chronic glomerular disease worldwide
IgA nephropathy
Upper limit of normal protein excretion in healthy children
150 mg per day
Heavy proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia, edema, hyperlipidemia
Nephrotic syndrome
Major complication of nephrotic syndrome
Infection
Due to urinary loss of Ig and properdin factor, defective cell mediated immunity, immunosuppresive therapy, malnutrition
Dose of prednisone for nephrotic syndrome
Prednisone 60 mg/m2/ day (max dose 80mg) 2-3 doses for at least 4 wks
When to do renal biopsy in nephrotic syndrome
Steroid resistant ( proteinuria of 2+ or greater after 8 wks steroids)
Vaccine for nephrotic syndrome
- Polyvalent pneumococcal vaccine for all NS patients. To be given when in remission and off of daily steroids
- Varicella (if negative titer)
- Influenza vaccine yearly
