inflammation of the glomeruli
How would you define acute post-infection glomerulonephritis (APIGN)?
inflammation of the glomeruli due to staph or strep infection

Strep throat

What are the 4 complications nephritis can lead to?
Kidney failure
Pleural Effusion
Encephalopathy
DVT
What is the reason nephritis can lead to DVT?
low albumin levels
What is the reason nephritis leads to encephalopathy?
increased pressure in the brain from high blood pressure
What is one reason nephritis can lead to kidney failure having to do with our electrolytes?
hyperkalemia which leads to cardiac dysrhythmias.
Which diagnostic is the most accurate in diagnosing glomerulonephritis?
kidney biopsy
Which medication do patients need to avoid because it negatively affects their kidney function?
NSAIDs
What 2 things do we need to monitor for in prednisone?
increase blood pressure & blood glucose levels
What do ACE/ARB’s meds help with?
prevent protein loss (albumin)
What 3 foods should we avoid that contain potassium?
potatoes, tomatoes, melons
What 5 foods should we avoid that contain phosphorus?
Dark sodas, dairy, chocolate, meat, & nuts
What type of protein should patients eat with nephritis?
complete or high-value type proteins
