Neonates Flashcards
Risks for neonates after parturition
Obtaining oxygen from lungs rather than placenta
* Need surfactant
* Need to open within first few breaths
* Will have his RR initially
Poorly developed thermoregulatory mechanisms
* Will be wet
Immature renal and hepatic function
* High volume of distribution
High risk of hypovolaemia and hypocalcaemia
Immunologically mature
* Need colostrum within 6 hours
How can neonates acquire immunity
Transplacental and colostral
Colostrum:
*IgG
* some IgM and IgE
* Maternal lymphocytes
When should you vaccinate neonates?
During immunity gap
When maternal antibodies decline but before production of own antibodies
Can’t give too early - maternal antibodies will attack

Why does Failure of passive transfer occur
Poor quality colostrum
Insufficient intake (quantity or time)
What could cause poor quality colostrum?
○ Early lactation and colostral loss
○ Primiparous animals
○ Poor udder development
○ Mastitis
○ Lack of appropriate maternal antibodies
Consequences of FPT
- GI disease
- Respiratory disease
- Joint sepsis
- Umbilical abscess
- Fading puppy syndrome
- Increased mortality
- Poor weight gain
- Increased antibiotic usage
- Increased cost
- Poor welfare
Treatment of FPT
Donor colostrum within first 6 hours
Hyperimmune plasma
SCID
Severe Combined Immune Deficiency
