New Ballard Tool
assesses gestation btw 20-44 weeks
Eval of Anterior Vascular Lens Capsule Optic Exam
Assesses stage of normal embryonic lens development and atrophy between 27 and 34 weeks GA, requires opthalmascope, cannot be performed before 27 weeks, must be done within 48 hours
Grade 4 - still completely present - 27-28 weeks
Grade 3 - mostly present - 29-30
Grade 2 - less present - 31-32
Grade 1 - almost gone 32-34
Square window
Angle decreases as gestation progesses - extreme immaturity - 90 degree angle - progressing to 0
Ballard- Arm Recoil
Recoil increases as gestation increases
Ballard- popliteal angle
Angle decreases as gestation increases - extreme premature legs fold all the way to the head - Term babies - knee angle < 90 degrees
Ballard scarf sign
decreases as gestation increases - In extreme prematurity the elbow can go the the other side of the body before resistance is felt. Resistance is felt earlier as gestation progresses.
Ballard - lanugo
present at 20-28 weeks and decreases as gestation increases
Ballard plantar creases
first appear on anterior sole at 28-30 weeks, increase to heel with increasing gestation - may be accellerated with oligo and not accurate after 12 hours
Ballard - Eyes
eyes unfuse at 26-28 weeks,
ballard - ears
ear cartilage increases with increasing gestation
Ballard genitalia
Female - clitoris becomes less visible with increasing gestation and fat deposits in labia major increase with gestation
Male - testes descend, Rugae of scrotum increase as gestation increases
