Neisseria:

A
  • gram negative intracellular diplococcus
  • many are normal flora on mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract & urogenital tract.
  • sensitive to the environmental conditions outside of the body.
  • 2 important pathogens

Neisseria gonorrhoeae:

A
  • causative agent of gonorrhea since 1965. Most common reported STD.
  • can affect urethra, endocervix, anal canal, pharynx, conjunctiva.
  • bacteria collect and thrive In the neutrophils.
  • 2-7day incubation period.
  • males:95% will have a yellow outlet discharge from urethra & painful urination, can lead to sterility.
  • females:may be asymptomatic. Urethral/ vaginal discharge painful urination. Lower abdominal pain. About 50% will have symptoms may progress to PID, sterility, ectopic pregnancy.

Neisseria Meningitidis:

A
  • can be commensal inhabitant of upper respiratory tract.
  • can be spread by oral secretion or respiratory droplet.
  • a leading cause of bacterial meningitis.
  • inflammation of the meninges, begins as sore throat, leads to bacteremia and then meningitis.
  • most symptoms are caused by endotoxins: fever,headache,lesson appetite, stuff neck.
  • bacteria founding CSF in blood.
  • treated with penicillin, cephalosporins,rifamin, sulfonamide.
  • forms a polysaccharide capsule used in vaccine for military and in managing epidemics.
