Neisseria:
A
- gram negative intracellular diplococcus
- many are normal flora on mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract & urogenital tract.
- sensitive to the environmental conditions outside of the body.
- 2 important pathogens

Neisseria gonorrhoeae:
A
- causative agent of gonorrhea since 1965. Most common reported STD.
- can affect urethra, endocervix, anal canal, pharynx, conjunctiva.
- bacteria collect and thrive In the neutrophils.
- 2-7day incubation period.
- males:95% will have a yellow outlet discharge from urethra & painful urination, can lead to sterility.
- females:may be asymptomatic. Urethral/ vaginal discharge painful urination. Lower abdominal pain. About 50% will have symptoms may progress to PID, sterility, ectopic pregnancy.

Neisseria Meningitidis:
A
- can be commensal inhabitant of upper respiratory tract.
- can be spread by oral secretion or respiratory droplet.
- a leading cause of bacterial meningitis.
- inflammation of the meninges, begins as sore throat, leads to bacteremia and then meningitis.
- most symptoms are caused by endotoxins: fever,headache,lesson appetite, stuff neck.
- bacteria founding CSF in blood.
- treated with penicillin, cephalosporins,rifamin, sulfonamide.
- forms a polysaccharide capsule used in vaccine for military and in managing epidemics.
