Neils Saucy Study Tips Part 1 Flashcards
Width of neuron
10x10^-6 m
Volume of the human brain
1300 cc
What are the components of the meninges?
dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater
Dura mater
part of the meninges, tough, dense membrane, composed mostly of collagen fibres
Arachnoid mater
thin, non-vascular membrane. CSF is in here and meningitis can happen in here
Pia mater
a delicate membrane that closely covers the surface of the brain down to depths of the sulci
Cranial Nerve I Function
Olfactory nerve, Smell
Cranial Nerve II Function
Optic Nerve, Vision
Cranial Nerve III Function
Oculomotor nerve, movement of eyes, pupillary constriction and accomodation
Cranial nerve IV Function
Trochlear nerve, movement of eyes
Cranial Nerve V fucntion
Trigeminal nerve, muscles of mastication and eardrum tension, sensations from face, nose, mouth, and meninges
Cranial Nerve VI function
Abducent nerve, movement of eyes
Cranial Nerve VII function
Facial nerve, muscles of facial expression, tension on ear bones, lacrimation, salivation, taste, visceral sensory
Cranial Nerve VIII function
Vestibulocochlear nerve, hearing and equillibrium
Cranial Nerve IX function
Glossopharyngeal nerve, swallowing movements, salivation, taste, visceral sensory
Cranial Nerve X function
Vagus nerve and cranial root of XI, parasympathetics to thoracic and abdominal viscera, taste, visceral sensory
Cranial Nerve XI function
Spinal accessory nerve (spinal root), movements of the shoulder and head
Cranial nerve XII function
hypoglossal nerve, movements of the tongue
Cranial Nerve III LESION
produces eyelid drooping, pupil dilation, pupils pointed at temple
Cranial Nerve IV LESION
vertical diplopia, eye extorts
Cranial Nerve V LESION
result in loss of jaw reflex, loss of ipsilateral nostril sensitivity, loss of ipsilateral corneal sensation, trigeminal neuralgia
Cranial Nerve VI LESION
horizontal diplopia, pupil pulled inward
CN VII LESION
Bell’s palsy (paralysis of facial expression)
CN VIII FAILURE
excessive vestibular stimulation may result in nystagmus (to and fro eye movement)
