Neglected Tropical Diseases (lecture) Flashcards
What are the 6 pathogens/infectious agents?
Viruses, Bacteria, extoparasites, protozoa, fungi, helminths
What are the three general routes of pathogen transmission?
Contact, vehicle, vector
What is some examples of vehicle transmission?
Food-borne, water-borne, airborne droplets
What are some examples of contact transmission?
Person-to-person, droplet (mucous), indirect contact
how is the general transmission cycle between vector and host?
One of them is susceptible and gets infected by the other and then gets infected and can spread it on to the next
how does an enzootonic transmission ususally work?
Vector gets infected by host and then infects a human
How many are affected by NTDs?
More than one billion
Why is the NTDs a part of a vicious cycle?
Poverty conditions create risk for exposure and the diseases themselves create a risk of being poor
What are the five main intervention strategies for NTDs?
Vector control, preventive chemotherapy, WASH, veterinary public health, individual case management
