definition
A
rapidly progressive infection of the deep fascia –> necrosis of subcutaneous tissue

pain?
A
yes - intense, over affected skin and underlying muscle

Cause of type 1
A
mix of aerobic + anaerobic bacteria, usually following abd surgery/diabetes

Cause of type 2
A
group A streptococci, arises spontaneously in previously healthy people

Treatment + management
A
radical debridement +/- amputation, IV antibiotics

Antibiotics for type 1
A
broad spectrum combo, to include metronidazole

Antibiotics for type 2
A
high doses of benzylpenicillin + clindamycin
