Neck Flashcards
1
Q
Triangles of the neck
A
Anterior Triangle- formed by the anterior part of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, inferior part of the mandible and the midline of the neck
Posterior triangle- formed by the posterior part of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, trapezius, middle 3rd of clavicle
2
Q
Anterior triangle contains
A
- Platysma
- Big sheet muscle slung underneath the chin to the clavicles
- Supplied by the cervical branch of the facial nerve
- Mylohyoid
- Digastric
- Infrahyoid (strap) muscles
- Carotid arteries (goes in through the carotid canal)
- Internal jugular vein (emerges through skull via jugular foramen along with CN IX, X and XI
3
Q
Posterior triangle contains
A
- External jugular vein
- Subclavian artery
- Subclavian vein
- Trunks of the brachial plexus
- Phrenic nerve
- Vagus nerve
- Spinal accessory nerve

Q
Recurrent laryngeal- branch and supplies what
A
Branch off vagus
Supplies all intrinsic muscles of larynx with exception of the cricothyroid
5
Q
Recurrent laryngeal pathway
A
Around the aortic arch and subclavian artery
6
Q
Lymphatic drainage
A
Parotid- anterior to ear Mastoid occipital-posterior to ear Submandibular Submental- under mouth Deep and superficial cervical
7
Q
Superior Muscles attached to the hyoid bone
A
- Digastric – anterior (mandible) and posterior (mastoid)– supplied by mandibular div. of trigeminal and facial nerve respectively
- Middle pharyngeal constrictor muscle
- Hyoglossus muscle
- Styloidhyoid muscle-styloid process of temporal bone
- Geniohyoid muscle-chin
- Mylohyoid muscle –mandible, supplied by the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
- Sternohyoid – supplied by the ansa cervicalis
8
Q
Inferior muscles attached to hyoid bone
A
- Thyrohyoid muscle – supplied by C1 fibres via the hypoglossal nerve
- Omohyoid – hyoid to the shoulder (scapula) – supplied by the ansa cervicalis
- Sternohyoid – supplied by the ansa cervicalis
