20
Q
How does food pass over the trachea to get to the esophagus?
A
The epiglottis: a cartilagenous flap that seals off the larynx as food passes by
21
Q
What is choking?
A
A large bolus can get stuck in the oropharynx, holding down the epiglottis and preventing respiration
22
Q
Why do only humans choke? And why not babies?
A
Babies have ape-like skull proportions for suckling.

23
Q
6 steps of swallowing (deglutition)

A
First 3 Voluntary, second 3 involuntary

- Tongue sweeps bolus back (intrinsic tongue muscles)
- Hyoid slightly elevated (suprahyoid muscles)
- Bolus swept into oropharynx, lateral arches stiffen (palatoglossus, styloglossus)
- Soft palate elevated/tensed (veli palatini muscles)
- Hyoid elevates larynx, depressing epiglottis (suprahyoid muscles)
- Esophageal sphincter opens, pharygeal constrictors contract, send bolus into esophagus
