Under what terms will conductors and equipment be permitted by NEC?
It depends on the specific equipment however in most cases the item will need to be listed, labeled and identified as well as been tested and approved by an accredited testing laboratory
When judging equipment what 8 aspects should be considered?
-Suitability for installation and use in conformity with this Code
Informational Note No. 1: Equipment may be new, reconditioned, refurbished, or remanufactured.
Informational Note No. 2: Suitability of equipment use may be identified by a description marked on or provided with a product to identify the suitability of the product for a specific purpose, environment, or application. Special conditions of use or other limitations and other pertinent information may be marked on the equipment, included in the product instructions, or included in the appropriate listing and labeling information. Suitability of equipment may be evidenced by listing or labeling.
-Mechanical strength and durability, including, for parts designed to enclose and protect other equipment, the adequacy of the protection thus provided
-Wire-bending and connection space
-Electrical insulation
-Heating effects under normal conditions of use and also under abnormal conditions likely to arise in service
-Arcing effect
Electrical arcing when electricity jumps from a one connection to another. This flash of electricity reaches temperatures of 35,000°F. Arcing can and will cause a fire in your home
-Classification by type, size, voltage, current capacity, and specific use
-Other factors that contribute to the practical safeguarding of persons using or likely to come in contact with the equipment
What are six signs of electrical arching?
-A bright light or flash accompanying the discharge.
-A loud noise during the discharge. -Sparks flying from the point of discharge. -A burning smell coming from the area of discharge. -The area around the discharge becomes hot. -Electrical equipment in the area stops working properly.
How should listed and labeled equipment be installed and used?
-Listed and label equipment shall be installed and in used in accordance with any instruction in the listing or labeling
What voltage rating will a piece of equipment be given?
e voltage rating of electrical equipment shall not be less than the nominal voltage of a circuit
What will most conductors be made up of?
Most conductors under NEC are made of copper unless explicitly told otherwise
What are requirements for equipment made to interrupt circuits at fault levels ?
Equipment made for interruption should have a rating sufficient for the nominal circuit voltage and current available at the line terminals of the equipment
What requirements must a wire have to achieve good wire integrity?
For a wire to have wire integrity they must be free of short circuits, ground faults or any connections to ground other than then those required or permitted in NEC
What is a fault current?
A fault is the electrical current which flows through a circuit during an electrical fault condition
