Navigation and Travel Controls Flashcards
Longitude
ranges from 0 degrees at the equator to 90 degrees determining the east to west location
latitude
is an angle which ranges from 0° at the Equator to 90° (North or South)
Loxodrome/ RHumb Line
line that cuts through all meridians at the same angle, path taken by a ship that maintains a constant compass direction
Dead Reckoning (DR)
navigation using the ship/aircraft last known position
celestial Navigation
position fixing using the angular measurements taken between the Sun, Moon, a planet or a star
Radio Navigation
application of radio frequencies to determine the exact position of an object
Radar Navigation
Transmits microwave signals intended to locate other vessels to determine distance
Satellite Navigation
determines exact location of objects using satellites
4 ways of determining position
piloting, dead reckoning, celestial navigation, electronic navigation
