Navigation Flashcards
Explain VFR Altitudes to the East vs West
“East is odd and the West is even odder”
When heading east - odd altitude + 500’ (e.g. 3,500)
When heading west - even altitude + 500’ (e.g. 4,500)
Explain Course/Heading/Track
Course - intended direction over the ground
Heading - Direction of nose of aircraft
Track - actual path of aircraft
The difference between heading and track is the wind correction angle. You must fly a heading that corrects for wind in order to maintain your track.
Explain Airspeed vs. Groundspeed
Airspeed - your speed moving through the air
Groundspeed - your speed over the ground
How do you determine your Magnetic Heading?
+/- your magnetic variance to/from your True Heading
How do you determine your Compass Heading?
+/- your plane’s posted magnetic deviation from your Magnetic Heading
How do you determine your True Heading?
+/- the Wind Correction Angle from your ??????
