Navigation đđž Flashcards
Unrep
Broad term applied to all methods of transferring fuel, munitions, supplies and personnel from 1 vessel to another
Vertrep
Carried out by helicopters, relative wind speed should be between 330 and 030 degrees on the bow
Conrep
Connected replenishment, hoses, lines and wire ropes connect 2 ships which are right next to each other
FAS
Fueling at sea, fuel from one ship is pumped to another
RAS
Replenishment at sea, transferring of supplies and ammunition
Replenishment course (Romeo Course)
predetermined course allowing ships to maintain course with minimum stress on the rig.
OTC
Officer Tactical Command, responsible for selecting the replenishment course/ speed
Replenishment Speed (Romeo speed)
12-16 knots
Venturi effect
Reduction in air pressure between ships causing a drawing affect
Romeo Corpen
Planned replenishment course and speed
Control ship (Guide)
Flies golf flag, Local guide for replenishment, responsible for maintaining a steady speed and course.
Golf Flag
Yellow / Blue Vertical stripes - Maintain steady course / speed
Changes in course / speed dictated by
Station keeping on the formation guide,
avoiding navigational hazards
Approach ship
Responsible for attaining / maintaining a relative position to the control ship, responding to required course / speed changes,
Delivery ship
Control ship, provides lines and rigs.
Responsible for making preparations for and carry out procedures for use of the rig, Furnish rigs, including bolos or line gun, station to station phone lines and rig messengers
Romeo Flag
Red w/ yellow cross
Romeo at dip (3/4s way up)
Flown by both ships, i am steady on course and speed- Delivering ship, I am ready to come alongside- Receiving ship
Romeo Close-up (all the way up)
I am ready for your approach- Delivering ship, I am commencing approach- Receiving ship
Romeo Hauled down
Messenger is in hand - Both ships
Prep Flag
Yellow trapezoid shape with green bar,
Prep at dip
I expect to disengage - Receiving ship
Prep Close up
Replenishing completed, disengaging final station - Receiving ship
Prep Hauled down
All lines clear - Receiving ship
Bravo Flag
Red jagged B shape
Bravo at dip
Have temporarily stopped supplying
Bravo close up
Fuel, explosives, inflammable materials being transferred.
Bravo hauled down
Delivery is completed
Difference between emergency and standard breakaway
Hard rudder and max speed (emergency). Standard is simply increasing speed
Accelerated standard breakaway
Max speed at small rudder orders, .5 degrees at a time
Special Sea and anchor detail
During mooring / getting underway. Positioning personnel around the ship to provide max safety / efficiency. Close range to land / ship ( 1 mile), restricted waters, going to an anchorage
Plane guard
During flight quarters, allows for early detection and rescues in case of aircraft difficulties
Low visibility detail
fog or reduced visibility, when visibility in any direction is less then 3 miles
Flight Quarters
Safe operation of both fixed wing and rotary aircraft
Foxtrot flag
White with red diamond
Hotel
Half white Half red
Restricted maneuvering doctrine
defines the amount of movement a ship may use, assigns most qualified personnel in key navigation positions. During leaving / entering port, Unreps, flight ops, man overboard, GQ, restricted waters or COâs request
Who orders Abandon ship
CO
Abandon ship phase 1
Prepare all hands abandon ship
Abandon ship phase 2
All hands abandon ship, except securing/ salvage
Abandon ship phase 3
secure salvage, and abandon ship
Words to be passed
Prepare to abandon ship, the nearest land is __ degrees magnetic. Land is Hostile/ Friendly. Distance in nautical miles. Method of destruction. Nearest shipping lane __ degrees magnetic, True wind __, Sea star and Temp, Water depth, life expectancy in water
Emergency destruction
Water <100 fathoms, shred / burn
Water >100 fathoms, document sinking bags/ lock safe and let it go down
Lifeboats
2 lifeboats ( HB1 port, HB3 Starboard)
Life rafts
MK-6, 25-man capacity. Small cans around the ship, holds 110% (6200) of crew, 252 onboard
Life ring / buoys
Used to locate man overboard and provide flotation
Smoke float
Marine marker
Strobe light
Attached to life ring, provides light at night
DDRT
Digital Dead Reckoning Tracker, Mark exact ship position during man overboard
3 Types of man-overboard recovery
Airborne, Small boat, Shipboard

Start of turn
Transfer
End of turn
Pivot point
1/3 way aft from the bow
Turning circle
Path followed by pivoting point of the ship in making a 360 degree turn
True bearing
Direction from 1 point to another clockwise using true north as a guiding reference point
DIW
Dead in water, Drifting with no propulsion
Relative bearing
Direction to a point relative to the shipâs position
