aim to raid spanish ports and bring findings home
began with 5 ships, but returned with 1 ship
plymouth -> south america -> north america -> indonesian islands -> africa -> plymouth

england now found direct routes to india and far east
made things cheaper as they did not have to go through a middle man
east india trade company was created in 1600
oversaw trade with england and india

first english privateer to take part in transatlantic slave trade
as a result, englands involvement in the slave trade grew and slave traders made fortunes
why was drake’s circumnavigation impressive?
many sailors died of disease
many of the places drake had visited had never been explored by european sailors therefore no maps
bad weather could blow ships off course
who was walter raleigh?
given permission by elizabeth to explore and colonise any land not ruled by a christian
in return for one fifth of all gold and silver he found
in 1585, sent settlers to virginia to establish a colony called roanoke, however, when supply ships reached roanoke in 1590, roanoke dissappeared and became known as lost colony
